Huge Win for Equal Rights in California!

It took Federal Judge Vaughn Walker 136 pages to say it, but he recognized how discriminatory California's Proposition 8 was, and overturned the sucker! Now California is, for the time being at least, once again free to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples!

Walker's conclusion was damned near poetic:

Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples. Because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians, and because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional.
Yeah, buddy!

Now, of course, the howling yahoo's will be rushing into the Court of Appeals to challenge this decision, and it will eventually play out before the United States Supreme Court where five old men, activists all, will have to wrestle with their own conscience and sense of fairness and decide if the time has arrived for America to grant homosexual couples the same right to marry as has always been enjoyed (sometimes!) by heterosexual couples. It will only take one of those five to scoot a little bit to the left, and America will have truly arrived in the twenty-first century!

Judge Walker is a beacon of hope. May his light shine across our land and bring fairness and relief to those who have been oppressed for far too long!

This is a great day for California and a great day for America!
