I recently saw two interesting statistics regarding inoculations against COVID. One said that only 51% of adult Americans were fully vaccinated against the dreaded virus, and the other said that 75% of adult Americans had taken at least one of the two-shot regimen. And while that does not sound very precise, it would appear to indicate that between a quarter and a half of all adult American's are still not fully inoculated against COVID.
Most of the reasons being put forth regarding why people aren't getting the shots seem to be steeped in pure ignorance, and in many cases, obstinate politics. They have seen paranoid stories on Facebook and other "news" sites indicating that the shots magnetize people, or place tracking devices in their bodies, or perhaps even lead to intelligent thought - or whatever - and they just aren't having it! Others want to keep the unvaccinated numbers high because they think that it hurts Joe Biden politically.
Many people aren't getting their shots to help end this international nightmare, and by staying unvaccinated they are insuring that the virus keeps spreading. They are free to do as they please because so far there have been damned few consequences for their selfish behavior. But now, finally, that is beginning to change. Now we are seeing the emergence of consequences - besides illness and horrific deaths - for refusing to get vaccinated. Now people are being barred from businesses and venues, and some are even losing their jobs.
Today there was a story in the news about some who are suddenly finding themselves without a doctor.
Dr. Mike Green, a pediatrician and internist in Knoxville, Tennessee, has announced that he is "breaking-up" with his patients who refuse to get vaccinated against COVID. Not only is the good doctor concerned about his own health and that of his staff, he also recognizes that unvaccinated patients pose a risk to all of the other patients who are populating his waiting room - especially those who are immunocompromised. He said that he has asked those stubborn patients, the ones who refuse to get vaccinated, to find another physician.
Dr. Green lamented:
"It's the breakup talk. We just need to see other people. You have a right to choose, and I'm not in a position to force you to do anything, but vaccination is very important to me."
Then he returns the letterman's jacket and the senior ring - and shows them the door!
Now insurance companies need to follow Dr. Green's example and breakup with unvaccinated customers who feel they have a "right" to share in the insurance pool along with people who took the basic health precaution of getting their shots. And then perhaps hospitals should consider prioritizing care to vaccinated individuals over those who refuse to take standard medical precautions.
If selfish and inconsiderate actions have consequences, perhaps more people will roll up their sleeves and do their patriotic and life-saving duty.
And if they don't, well . . .
"Comma, comma, down dooby doo down down
Breaking up is hard to do!"
