Monday's Poetry: "Candle in the Wind"

Yesterday I ran a tribute to Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jean Baker) in this space to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her death, and today I have decided to extend that tribute by using Elton John's wonderful song, Candle in the Wind, for the Monday poem.  Elton  wrote the music in 1973 - just eleven years after Marilyn's death, and the lyrics were composed by his friend and  music collaborator, Bernie Taupin.  The amazing Elton John, of course, was the singer who made the song famous.

Elton John updated Candle in the Wind in 1999 as a tribute to Princess Diana.

This is a beautiful piece of writing.  It is one of those songs that causes me to stop and listen every time it comes on the radio, what NPR would call a "driveway moment."

Candle in the Wind
Words by Bernie Taupin

Music by Elton John

Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While others around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they mad you change your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candled burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
when the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the 22nd row
Who sees you as something more than sexual
More than just Marilyn Monroe

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have like to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
