An inebriated individual messing about with an AR-15 assault weapon while caring for multiple minor children. What could possibly go wrong?
A sheriff’s deputy in Florida was arrested last week – the day before Thanksgiving - on a felony charge of aggravated child abuse and misdemeanor counts of using a firearm while under the influence of alcoholic beverages and culpable negligence. He was later released on $50,000 bond and is currently on unpaid administrative leave from his duties as a jailer with the sheriff’s office.
The deputy reported that he was sitting on the couch with his son (age not provided to the public) showing the boy how to clean his (the Dad’s) rifle, an AR-15, when the weapon fell from a television tray and fired off a round as it hit the floor. The bullet struck a minor girl, wounding her in the hip and abdomen, and requiring emergency surgery and extensive care. She is apparently going to survive.
When other deputies arrived at the scene, they noticed that the suspect had alcohol on his breath, and he was arrested. The man admitted to deputies that he had had “around six beers.” The son reported that his dad had had two beers and three mixed drinks consisting of whiskey and lemonade. The boy also indicated that the mixed drinks were large. The son told police that his dad drinks daily, including on days when he later has to go to work.
The suspect told police that he is familiar with firearms, has never had a gun accidentally discharge before, and he thought that the gun was not loaded.
The arrest affidavit stated that the suspect was caring for multiple minor children when the incident occurred.
The suspect has entered a written plea of “not guilty.”
Of course, he has.
