* * * * * Election Dispatch #6 * * * * *
It's 7:30 CST in the Midwest and the polls have closed in a bunch of states. The last count that I heard over National Public Radio (NPR) was 55 electoral votes for Trump and 85 for Biden, with no surprises at this point. The saddest story so far this evening is that Mitch McConnell has been re-elected to the Senate from Kentucky - his seventh term. Of course, if Democrats come up with a majority in the Senate after tonight, McConnell will lose his spot as Majority Leader - and his big, cushy office. So it's still very possible that McConnell won't lead the Senate when the new Congress assembles in January.
I just heard an announcement that Trump had won Arkansas and that the state's junior senator, Tom Cotton, has won his second term in the US Senate. Cotton, a Republican, is a tool who has national ambitions. Regardless of how Trump does tonight, I suspect that Cotton will soon be out visiting other states and doing favors for other GOP candidates as he begins to collect chits to use during the next presidential primary season.
Indiana, the home of Mike Pence and Mother, has just been called for Trump. Latest numbers that I have heard are 85 for Biden and 72 for Trump. So far none of the big swing states have been called. It feels like it will be a long night - and some states may still be counting votes for several days.
Four years ago I went to bed early. The end result hadn't been decided, but the signs were all there. It was a very depressing evening. I began today with a much better attitude. Donald Trump was going to lose - or I was moving to Canada!
And, as of right now, I'm not focused on packing!
