Yesterday Donald Trump fired the top cyber security official at the Department of Homeland Security because the man had the effrontery to say that the recent US elections had been relatively problem-free, a sentiment that flew directly in the face of the baseless accusations of election fraud that Trump and his GOP tools had been making.
Christopher C. Krebs, a young lawyer who had been appointed by Trump to head the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency at DHS as its original director, was widely recognized by members of both parties as handling the job well.
Trump fired Krebs "effective immediately" over what he regarded as Krebs' "highly inaccurate" statement regarding the security of the recent election. His statement on the firing read in part:
"The recent statement by Chris Krebs on the security of the 2020 Election was highly inaccurate, in that there were massive improprieties and fraud - including dead people voting. Poll Watchers not allowed into polling locations, 'glitches' in the voting machines which changed...votes from Trump to Biden, late voting, and many more. Therefore, effective immediately, Chris Krebs has been terminated as Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency."
Trump's many legal maneuvers and lawsuits challenging the election results are quickly crumbling in the courts, and his mainstay of support in his struggle to remain in the White House now seems to be Republican politicians and office holders, many of whom live in fear of what his wrath could do to them politically if they broke ranks.
My own congressman, a GOP brass-plated Trump tool named Jason Smith (MO-8), sent out a newsletter over the weekend whose lead article was on election fraud along with a defense of Trump's claims of fraud. The congressman, like Trump himself, was light on specifics to back his spurious assertions.
It's more than a bit ironic that these proponents of "free and fair elections" which cater to "legal voters" had nothing to say four years ago when Russia actually was compromising the integrity of our nation's elections.
Concede, Trump. Your time at the head of this reality show is fast drawing to a close. You have been voted out by a clear and overwhelming majority of the electorate. The United States of America is moving on - and you will as well - whether you want to or not.
