Karl A. Racine, the Attorney General for the District of Columbia, announced yesterday that his office is filing civil suits against two organizations for their involvement in the domestic terrorist attack on the US Capitol of January 6th of this year.  Racine made his announcement over Twitter:

"BREAKING: I’m suing the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, the first civil lawsuit by a government entity against the Jan. 6 insurrectionists. They caused extensive damage to the District, our democracy and particularly the brave men and women of our Metropolitan Police Department."

A civil suit will not result in any jail time, but it could lead to monetary compensation for damages and expenses that the District alleges was caused by the action of the "Proud Boys" and the "Oath Keepers."  Attorney General Racine said that the lawsuit seeks to "recover the costs of deploying hundreds of city police officers to defend the Capitol against the attack, as well as medical and paid-leave costs that were incurred afterward."  It also brings civil assault and battery charges against the two groups and thirty individuals by name and fifty unnamed persons.

Racine also told the Washington Post that he is trying to gather more information about the two groups through the use of the lawsuits.   He said,"I am particularly interested in understanding the financial apparatus of these individuals and entities and where the money comes from."  He is looking for the funders!

The civil suits represent one more front in the legal battle against the domestic terrorism that rocked the nation this past January.   They complement the on-going criminal investigations and prosecutions, and, in this case, they also pose a threat to the finances of groups and individuals who threatened the very foundations of our government.

When it comes to protecting democracy, every strategy should be employed and every card should be played.  There must be a cost associated with trying to topple a duly elected government, and that cost must be substantial.   Civil suits are one more way of bringing order and accountability out of chaos.

Karl Racine is fighting for all of us!
