Ancestor Archives: Christopher Landers (1770-1814) and Phoebe Lee (1774-1841)

by Rocky Macy

Christopher LANDERS was born in Mecklenberg County, North Carolina, in 1770, the son of Henry and Catharine (GOODNIGHT) LANDERS. He passed away in Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1814.

Phoebe LEE was born in Tryon, Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1774, the daughter of Robert A. and Anna (SHIPMAN) LEE.  She died in Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1841, and is believed to be buried in the Landis Cemetery in Bedford County.

Christopher and Phoebe are thought to have married in the early 1790’s, possibly in Warren County, Kentucky, where most, if not all, of their nine children were born.

Christopher and Phoebe (LEE) LANDERS were my g-g-g-g-g-grandparents.

The known children of Christopher and Phoebe were:  Logan LANDERS (1790-1862);  Henry Lee LANDERS (1793-1835);  John LANDERS (1795-1854);   Abel W. LANDERS (1796-1870);  Jacob LANDERS (1804-1850);  James LANDERS (1807-?);  Sarah Ann LANDERS (1807-1890);  Robert Lee LANDERS (1810-1876);  and, Mary Elizabeth LANDERS (1810-1858).

Of those children, Abel W. LANDERS married his second cousin, Sarah Ann “Sally SHIPMAN;  Sarah Ann LANDERS married David Granville NUTT (my ancestors), and Mary Elizabeth LANDERS married Jacob SHIPMAN.

Much of what is known about the history of Christopher and Phoebe (LEE) LANDERS came down through the history of their son, Abel W. LANDERS who was a prominent politician in southwest Missouri and Hood County, Texas, and also their daughter, Sarah Ann (LANDERS) NUTT, who was the matriarch of one of the founding families of the town of Granbury in Hood County, Texas.
