The End of the Road

There was apparently some tornado damage around the city of Tupelo, Mississippi, last night, but none was apparent in the area of town where we were staying.   However, all of the alerts, sirens, wind, rain, and thunder made for a most exciting evening!

We left Tupelo around 9:00 this morning and took a leisurely drive to Memphis where we spent a couple of hours on Beale Street exploring the sights and enjoying a nice lunch at the Blues City Cafe.  Today is Erin's birthday, so the Memphis experience was partly a celebration in her honor.  On the way into town we saw the famous Sun Records where Elvis did his early recordings, and on the way out we went past the enormous "Bass Pro" pyramid.  There is lots to see and do in Memphis - and it's only a little over three hours from my town of West Plains, Missouri.

We didn't get to Graceland, but I had been there forty years earlier with a busload of high school seniors - shortly after the "King" died.  Memphis also is home to the Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated, and the world renowned St. Jude's Hospital that was founded by Danny Thomas.

About 4:00 this afternoon we pulled into the drive at my little house in West Plains.  Rosie was deliriously happy to see me and the rest of the weary travelers.  Riley was also happy, but much more reserved!

Tim and his family and Molly are now on their way home and will arrive later this evening.  Molly boards a plane in the morning at KCI in Kansas City and will be at here home in Oregon a few hours later.

It's been quite a week!
