Support for the ACLU

Every year the federal government has a national campaign where it encourages employees - civilians and those in uniform - to contribute a few dollars of their salaries to selected charities.  They inundate personnel with catalogs that describe hundreds of charities and lets contributors know facts like what each charity does and how much of their income goes to administrative costs.

The first time that I checked out this year's catalog, I opened it to a page where one of the "charities" discussed with Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum.  That shook me up so badly that that I set the catalog aside and forgot about it.  The most charitable thing that I could imagine doing for Phyllis Schlafly would be to completely ignore her.

Today, as the campaign was rolling to a close, I picked up the catalog and made a decision.  I checked the box to give a small percentage of my Army pay to the American Civil Liberties Union.  That made me feel warm and fuzzy on several levels.  An hour or so after submitting my donation form, one of our Captains came down the hall and presented me with a commemorative coin because my donation exceeded the bare minimum.

So not only did I syphon a bit of the Army's money off to support the important work of the ACLU, I was rewarded for doing it.  Life doesn't get much sweeter than that!
