Showing that he is even less brave now than he was sixty years ago when he was focused on dodging the Vietnam War draft, word leaked to the Washington Post yesterday that Donald Trump participated in a subterfuge as he left Ankara, Turkey, early last month after attending the NATO summit. Acting on a tip that his flight might be the target of an attack by Iranian forces, Trump boarded a legacy Air Force One (one of the older ones) in full view of the press cameras, and then slipped out a back side door where secretly boarded a food catering truck and got into a catering container. The containerized Trump was then transferred onto a smaller military aircraft, one supposedly in Turkey for the use of US Secretary of Defense, the testosterone-oozing and profusely tattooed Pete Hegseth.
Hegseth was permitted to fly back to England with Trump in the smaller but safer plane, but probably didn't get the full potentate treatment normally accorded to his boss.
Donnie having to give up a ride in an Air Force One, even an older one, for a smaller military plane is a story in and of itself. (He may have even had to sit in a regular passenger seat! Egads! And God alone knows the impact that the limited floorspace had on his bone spurs!). But the fact that it was s ruse and the original big plane kept its Air Force One call sign during the flight and thus became a "bait" plane to lure potential assassins away from the President - is also a very big story - because there were actual people aboard the plane who would have been killed had the anticipated attack been carried out.
Donnie was ingloriously stuffed into a catering crate and shuffled to another plane while the presidential press corps, some White House officials, and at least two cabinet secretaries were left aboard the "bait" plane. Did Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent even know they were being used as a lure to deflect an attack on Trump? At least now Little Marco and Scott should have a clearer understanding of their place in the executive branch pecking order.
Harrison Ford must be aghast. He would have never acted in such a cowardly manner. He was the boss aboard his Air Force One - and everybody knew it!
