Ancestor Archives: Angeline Nutt (Circa 1852)

by Rocky Macy

Angeline NUTT was born in Missouri (probably Newton County) around 1852, the second oldest child and oldest daughter of Henry and Celana (RUTLEDGE) NUTT.   It is likely that she was named in honor of her maternal grandmother, Angeline (GRINDSTAFF) RUTLEDGE.

Angeline NUTT was my great-great-grandmother.

As a single woman still living at the home of her parents, Angeline gave birth to my great-grandfather, Thomas Franklin NUTT, on September 20, 1870.  The identity of his father is unknown at the present time.

Angeline married Isaac N. LAWS on February 4, 1873,  (according to a database of Missouri Marriages, 1805-2002), or on February 16, 1873, (according to a database of Missouri Compiled Marriages, 1851-1900).  Both databases are maintained at Ancestry.com.

Isaac and Angeline (NUTT) LAWS had two children.  Their son, William Henry LAWS, was born in Neosho, Newton County, Missouri, on November 7, 1873, and their daughter, Mary, was born two years later.

By the time of the 1880 census, all three of Angeline’s children were living in the home of her parents, Henry and Celana NUTT of Neosho, Missouri.   At that point Angeline and Isaac had disappeared from the public record and their ultimate fate remains unknown.

Angeline’s children grew up in the home of her parents’ Henry and Celana (RUTLEDDGE) NUTT, and though my great-granfather knew who his biological mother was, he always referred to Henry and Celana as his father and mother.  William Henry LAWS spent his entire life in and around Neosho, Missouri, and passed away there on November 17, 1957.   It is unknown what became of Mary LAWS.   Thomas Franklin NUTT, spent his entire life in and around Neosho, Missouri, and passed away there on May 14, 1958.

(This descendant of Angeline NUTT LAWS would welcome contact with any family researchers who might have information regarding the fate of his great-great-grandmother.  All communications will be answered.)
