The Nevada Angle: Running on Racism

I don't get to see "Meet the Press" on my Japanese satellite system, but from reading on-line reviews of last Sunday's program on the Internet, it must have been a doozey!  Apparently Rachel Maddow, one of the most astute and intelligent political trackers in the country, talked about one of Sharron Angle's recent television ads, and labeled that ad the most "overtly racist" of the 2010 campaign season.

Angle's racist ad features a group of new high school graduates, all white, celebrating their graduation - when suddenly a group of dark skinned, menacing-looking young men are shown, and depicted as illegal immigrants out to steal college grants and tuition assistance from the deserving white kids.  Yup, the good guys were white and the bad guys were brown.  (As God intended, Sharron?)

It's not that Ms. Angle isn't smart, the problem is that she is insensitive to the point of being dangerous - and she drinks her own Kool-Aid - she believes the crap that she spreads..   It's not about fairness or what is legal - it's about her adherence to fundamentalist Christian theology and her staunch belief in a wrathful, white, male God.  Right now she is just an interesting sideshow, but if she makes it to the Senate, Sharron Angle will be a dangerous national embarrassment.

America is a better place than that.
