Throupled with Children

A throuple is a committed polyamorous relationship involving three people which might, under the right circumstances, also be described as a menage a trois with wedding bands.  There was an article on CNN's homepage today discussing a throuple of (relatively) young medical professionals - all males - in San Diego who have been involved in lengthy legal proceedings trying to get each of their names on the birth certificates of their two young children.

The children, a little girl named Piper who was born in 2017, and a boy toddler by the name of Parker,  live in the day-to-day care of their three fathers - and all three dads are now the official legal parents of both children.  The kids were conceived with assistance from an out-of-state egg-donor and a pair of female surrogates,  Two of the fathers have been together eighteen years, and the third joined the union eight years ago.

It took a lot of legal effort, and no small amount of cash, but the three men, Alan, Jeremy, and Jenkins, are now permanent legal fixtures in the lives of their children.  They believe that they may be the first polyamorous family in California - and possibly in the United States - to be named as the legal parents of a child.

While it is possible that the children may suffer some degree of social intolerance as they grow up due to their unique family structure, the dads are hopeful that will not be the case - and they note that all of their colleagues and friends have been very accepting of their life-sharing arrangement.

The boundaries of what constitutes a family are expanding socially and legally, and Americans are opening their minds and their hearts to the new realities of family structures.

The more people in this country who love and care for children, the better the country will be.

Three dads?  No problem.

Nor should it be!
