The clubs and bars in California's capital city of Sacramento close at 2:00 a.m., and last night as they were closing in a trendy downtown area near the city's sports complex, a big fight broke out that was quickly followed by gunfire. Witnesses said there were multiple shooters. The rapid gunfire continued as people fled in panic down the city streets, and by the time it all ended six people were dead, three men and three women, and twelve more had been injured and taken to area hospitals.
As of this morning no arrests have been made, but one of the weapons had been recovered.
The mayor of Sacramento said that "thoughts and prayers are no longer enough." He went on to decry guns as the "scourge" of the community, state, and nation.
A shooting at an outdoor concert in Dallas on Saturday night resulted in one death and ten injuries - and again no arrests have been made. In February there was a late-night shooting at a large party in Charleston, Missouri, where two people were killed and fourteen injured - again, with multiple shooters.
The indiscriminate shootings are happening with such frequency that many never make it past the level of local news coverage. They are happening so fast that people are becoming jaded to the bloody events and can no longer summon the energy to even feign outrage at their occurrence.
As the bullets continue to fly with alarming frequency, many state legislatures, especially those controlled by the Republican Party, rush to earn the financial support of the gun lobby by passing laws to arm as many people as humanly possible with few-to-no restrictions on who may purchase guns or where they may be carried. Many states and communities allow people with no weapons' training to openly carry guns into businesses, churches, and even taverns.
The gun industry would have us believe that the only way to protect yourself from this ever-increasing madness is to buy a gun! Of course, if a person believes that, then that person is obviously too damned dumb to be trusted with a gun. Having more guns on the street becomes the reason for having even more guns on the street.
Guns and booze and the exuberance of late-night revelers - what could possibly go wrong?
