(More profiles of the heirs to the 1920 estate of William C. SMITH of Newton County, Missouri.)
38. George HANKINS has so far not been found in the public record other than when he was named as an heir to the 1920 estate of William C. SMITH in Newton County, Missouri. His surname would indicate that he descended from William’s older sister, Sarah “Sallie” Ann (SMITH) HANKINS, and her husband, Timothy W. HANKINS. Furthermore, his placement on the court list of heirs, above the placement of two of Timothy and Sarah’s known children, suggests to this researcher that he was a son of Timothy and Sarah, perhaps born after the 1860 census. (The family of Timothy W. and Sarah “Sallie” (SMITH) HANKINS has not been located on any US census after the one from 1860.)
39. Andrew HANKINS was born Andrew T. HANKINS in the state of Tennessee to Timothy W. and Sarah “Sallie” Ann (SMITH) HANKINS around the year 1852. Andrew’s mother, Sarah “Sallie” Ann (SMITH) HANKINS, was an older sister to William C. SMITH, which made Andrew William’s nephew.
As of this point in time Andrew T. HANKINS has only been located twice in the public record. His first appearance was in the 1860 US census for McDonald Township of Jasper County, Missouri, when he was listed in the household of his parents. The family members, all HANKINS, included: Timothy W. (age 35), Sarah A. (29), William F. (9), Andrew T. (8), John H. (7), Louisa C. (4), and “Parthenia” J. (2).
Andrew’s second appearance in the public record occurred when he was named as an heir in the estate of his uncle, William C. SMITH of Newton County, Missouri, in 1920, at which time he would have been around sixty-eight years of age.
40. Parthena HANKINS was born Parthena J. HANKINS in the state of Missouri to Timothy W. and Sarah “Sallie” Ann (SMITH) HANKINS around the year 1858. Parthena’s mother, Sarah “Sallie” Ann (SMITH) HANKINS was an older sister to William C. SMITH, which made Parthena William’s niece.
As of this point in time Parthena J. HANKINS has only been located twice in the public record. Her first appearance was in the 1860 census for McDonald Township of Jasper County, Missouri, when she was listed in the household of her parents. The family members, all HANKINS, included: Timothy W. (age 35), Sarah A. (29), William F. (9), Andrew T. (8), John H. (7), Louisa C. (4), and “Parthenia” J. (2).
Parthena’s second appearance in the public record occurred when she was named as an heir in the estate of her uncle, William C. SMITH of Newton County, Missouri, in 1920. Parthena, who was still referred to by her maiden name, would have been approximately sixty-two-years-old at that time.
41. Loula SMITH was born Lucinda Louisa HANKINS in the state of Missouri to William Franklin and Louisa Marie (EVANS) HANKINS on April 27, 1874. Lucinda’s father, William Franklin HANKINS, was the son of Sarah “Sallie” Ann (SMITH) HANKINS, an older sister to William C. SMITH. That made William Franklin HANKINS, the nephew of William C. SMITH, and Lucinda Louisa HANKINS William C. SMITH’s grandniece.
(Lucinda Louisa (HANKINS) SMITH became an heir to the estate of William C. SMITH when her father, William Franklin HANKINS, passed away in Binger, Caddo County, Oklahoma, on July 18, 1916, over three years before his uncle, William C. SMITH, died in Missouri on February 8, 1920.)
(Lucinda Louisa HANKINS was always known in various public records by a nickname that was some form of Lula: Lulla, Loula, and even Louella - with the most common usage being “Lula.”)
Lucinda and her birth family have not been located on the 1880 US census. It is known that she had one older sibling, a sister named Sadie M. (1871-1956), who married George Thomas SMITH. Lucinda also had six younger siblings: Alice (1876-1960), who married Mortimer GREGORY; Absolem (1879-?) spouse unknown; Thomas Clifford (1883-1965), who married Bessie Agatha Gertrude HISER; Nellie Lenora (1884-1963), who married Joseph Wesley WILSIE; William Bruce (1885-1965), who married Alta Enid HALE; and, Charles Rown (1892-1985), who married Deloris HISER.
Lucinda Louisa HANKINS married Jefferson D. SMITH (b. June 14, 1863, Texas) sometime around 1890. (He is identified by a couple of sources at Ancestry.com as “Jefferson Davis SMITH.”) By the time of the 1900 US census Lucinda and Jeff had four daughters and were living in Moore Township of Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. The household included: Jeff SMITH (age 37), “Lulla” SMiTH (26), “Gladis” (9), Pearl (7), Amber (4), and Maud (2).
Jeff and Lula SMITH were living in Fern Township of Caddo County, Oklahoma when the 1910 US census was taken. By that time they had nine children living at home. The household included the following, all SMITHs: Jeff (age 48), “Lula” (36), “Glady” (19), Pearl (17), Amber (15), Maud (12), Fay (10), Frank (8), Bonnie (5), “Amie” (Anna, 3) and John (1).
The 1920 US census revealed that three of the older five girls had left home, and Jeff and Lucinda had three new sons. The family roster of 1920 included the following, all SMITHs: Jeff, (age 56), “Lula” (46) Amber (23), Maud (21), Frank (17), Bonnie (15), Anna (11), John (10), “Tommie” (8), “Antony” (6), and (Jay) Ross (3).
Jefferson D. SMITH died on April 13, 1929. When the 1930 census occurred the following year Lucinda was recorded as the widowed, female, head-of-household whose name was “J.D. SMITH.” At that time the family was living in a rented home in Sickles Township, Caddo County, Oklahoma. Those present in the household included (all SMITHs): “J.D.” (Lucinda, age 56), Frank (26), “Annie” (22), Anthony (17), Jay (13), and a granddaughter, Bettie Jean CLEVELAND (1). (Bettie Jean’s parentage is unknown at this point.)
The US census for 1940 found “Lula” SMITH living by herself in Anadarko, Caddo County, Oklahoma.
The twelve children of Jefferson D. and Lucinda Louisa (HANKINS) SMITH were: Gladys (1890-1976), who married Randolph C. DIEBALL; Pearl Loretta (1893-1979), who married Ernest STATON; Amber Alice (1896-1970), who married Lee Dewey CANNON; Maud (1897-1948), who married Otto Melton MITCHELL; Fay S. (1900-1979), who married Lester Clark DODSON; Frank M. (1902-1992), who married Rosa Lee JENNINGS; Bonnie L. (1905-1977), who married Albert DIEBALL; Anna (1907-1990), who married Kenneth Edward CHILDS; John O. (1910-1983), who married Lucille ASHLEY; Tommy Edwin (1911-1990), spouse unknown; Anthony Wayne (1913-1988), spouse unknown, and Jay Ross (1917-1997), spouse unknown.
Lucinda Louisa (HANKINS) SMITH passed away on January 22, 1958, at the age of eighty-three. She is buried in the Binger Cemetery, in Binger, Caddo County, Oklahoma, next to her husband, Jefferson D. SMITH. Her name on the headstone is a very simple “Lula SMITH.”
42. L.C. HANKINS appears to have been Thomas Clifford HANKINS who was born in Newton County, Missouri, to William Franklin and Louisa Marie (EVANS) HANKINS on May 2, 1883. Thomas’s father, William Franklin HANKINS, was the son of Sarah “Sallie” Ann (SMITH) HANKINS, an older sister to William C. SMITH. That made William Franklin HANKINS, the nephew of William C. SMITH, and Thomas Clifford HANKINS William C. SMITH’s grandnephew.
(Thomas Clifford HANKINS became an heir to the estate of William C. SMITH when his father, William Franklin HANKINS, passed away in Binger, Caddo County, Oklahoma, on July 18, 1916, over three years before his uncle, William C. SMITH, died in Missouri on February 8, 1920.)
Thomas Clifford HANKINS was the fifth of eight children born to William Franklin and Louisa Marie (EVANS) HANKINS. His siblings included: Sadie M. (1871-1956), who married George Thomas SMITH; Lucinda Louisa (1874-1958) who married Jefferson D. SMITH; Alice (1876-1960), married Mortimer GREGORY; Absolem HANKINS (1879-?), spouse unknown; Nellie Lenora (1884-1963,), who married Joseph Wesley WILSIE; William Bruce (1885-1965), who married Alta Enid HALE; and, Charles Rown (1892-1985), who married Deloris HISER.
The 1890 US census was destroyed by a fire, and neither Thomas Clifford HANKINS nor his birth family has been located on the 1900 US census, so the first public record to mention Thomas was a marriage license that was issued in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, in 1904. According to that document Thomas C. HANKINS married “Agatha” HISER on October 2, 1904. The bride’s complete name was Bessie Agatha Gertrude HISER, and she often went by “Bessie” and “Gertrude.”
Thomas and his wife and three children were living on a rented farm in Fern Township, Caddo County, Oklahoma, when the 1910 census was taken, and Thomas was a self-employed farmer. Present in the household were the following, all HANKINS: Thomas (age 27), Gertrude (23), Alaf (Olaf, a son, 5), Ortulee (Orville, 3), and Mary (0).
Thomas Clifford HANKINS registered for the World War I draft on September 12, 1918, in Caddo County, Oklahoma. He listed his nearest relative on that registration as Bessie Gertrude HANKINS.
The 1920 US census found Thomas C. HANKINS (age 36) living and working on a rented farm in Conewango Township, Caddo County, Oklahoma, along with his wife, Gertrude HANKINS (32) and six children, all HANKINS: “Olof” (14), “Orvill” (12), Mary (10), Randolph (9), Fern (5), and Thomas (3).
The 1920 US census occurred on January 1st of that year, which was unusually early for the census. Gertrude died two months later on February 29, 1920, in Binger, Caddo County, Oklahoma. She had been born in Leon, Love County, Oklahoma, on April 20, 1887, and was 32-years-old at the time of her death.
Thomas remarried less than six months after Gertrude’s death. He married his second wife, Orpha A. BARE, in Caddo County, Oklahoma, on August 19, 1920. Thomas had fathered six children by Gertrude, and he would go on to have four more by Orpha. Census data for 1910, 1920, 1930,and 1940 all indicate that Orpha was born around 1905, which means she would have been around 15-years-old when she married Thomas - and he would have been thirty-seven. (One family source at Ancestry.com states that Orpha “Angeline” BARE was born January 21, 1905, in Anadarko, Caddo County, Oklahoma, and that she passed away in Arkansas in 1994.)
When the 1930 US census occurred Thomas and Orpha were living in Conewango Township of Caddo County, Oklahoma. That household consisted of the following, all HANKINS: Thomas (age 47), Orpha (25), Thomas (son of Thomas and Gertrude, 13), and three children of Thomas and Orpha: Katie (8), William (6), and “Joe” (a daughter, 3).
The HANKINS family was living in a rented house in Anadarko, Caddo County, Oklahoma, when the 1940 US census was taken. That census listed Thomas (age 56), Orpha (35) “Tommy” (23), Billy 16), Josephine (14), and Dempsey (8).
Thomas Clifford HANKINS' ten children included the following, from oldest to youngest:
Olaf Edward (1905-1977), who married Ruth McENTIRE; Orville Clifton (1907-1989), who married Julia Lee THRASHER; Mary Dewain (1909-1995), who married Lloyd Clarence GABEHART; Randolph Raymond (1911-1983), who married Opal Elizabeth PAYTON; Fern Helen (1914-1971), who married 1. Clifford Earl PAYTON, and 2. Mr. BRANDLEY; Thomas Mortemor (1916-1986), spouse unknown; Katie (ca. 1922 - ?), spouse unknown; William (ca. 1924 - ?), spouse unknown; Josephine (ca. 1926 -?), spouse unknown; and, Dempsey Lloyd (1931-2010), married Iwana Fae TRAPP.
Thomas Clifford HANKINS registered for the World War II draft on April 26, 1942, in Caddo County, Oklahoma. At that time he and his family were living in Anadarko, Caddo County, Oklahoma. That draft registration listed his place of birth as Newton County, Missouri, but his Find-a-Grave site states that he was born in Monett, Barry County, Missouri.
Thomas passed away on May 27, 1965, at the age of eighty-two. He is buried in the Binger Cemetery, in Binger, Caddo County, Oklahoma, next to Gertrude, his first wife.
(The next posting "One SMITH Family" will contain more profiles of the HANKINS family heirs to the 1920 estate of William C. SMITH of Newton County, Missouri.)
