I haven't written much about politics recently, and that omission has been intentional. Not only have I been involved in other things that merit some ink, but ignoring politics just seems to make me feel better about myself and my country. Of course every now and then you have to open the release valves in the sewer, no matter how bad it smells, just to keep it from exploding.
Here are brief mentions of a few things political which currently have me wound up:
Matt Gaetz, a Florida congressman who appears to be under investigation for flying a minor across state lines for purposes of having sex with her - something legal eagles refer to as "sex-trafficking" - has faced no sanctions from his political party - the GOP, of course - and is still serving in the House and on the prestigious and powerful House Judiciary Committee.
Meanwhile, Liz Cheney, another GOP member of the House, but a female who is not afraid to speak her mind, is being threatened with the loss of her position as Chair of the House Republican Conference, the third most powerful spot in the GOP hierarchy in the House. The orange and bloated former President is trying to exact revenge on any Republicans who supported efforts to impeach him, people like Liz Cheney, and the GOP House vermin are scurrying around trying to make the former President happy.
There are many who believe that the sins of Congressman Gaetz far outweigh those of Congresswoman Cheney, yet she is the one that the party is rushing to confront and remove from power. It's about party loyalty, and has nothing at all to do with standing for what is right or good governance.
Josh Duggar, a well known Republican personality who has been photographed with many stars of the party, has been in the news recently. Duggar, whose family became famous for a TLC reality show based on their large number of children, was forced to admit a few years back that he had sexually molested a couple of his sisters when they were children. Now Josh has been arrested on two counts related to the receipt and possession of child pornography. He is currently behind bars at the Washington County (Arkansas) Detention Center.
Yesterday Duggar's lawyers went into court and asked that he be released on bail - based on the rationale that he was easily recognizable and therefore could not flee the jurisdiction of the court. That's an interesting argument. I wonder if Roman Polanski would agree.
Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of Florida, is hard at work in his state removing all government restrictions related to the pandemic, yet the daily infection and death rates in Florida remain above the national average. DeSantis made news when the COVID shots first started becoming available by directing the first doses in Florida be provided to wealthier communities and insuring that his major political donors were at the head of the lines to receive their vaccinations. Poor communities and communities of color were not major DeSantis backers, so they could wait.
Now DeSantis, who has expeditiously overseen two special elections to fill vacant seats in Congress in Republican areas, appears to be stalling on filling a vacancy in a predominantly black district, one that is almost certain to elect a Democrat to Congress, and a seat that has been held for years by Democrats. Right now House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs every Democratic vote that she can muster, and the political shenanigans of DeSantis impair her ability to get legislation passed. By the time the election is held next January, a significant chunk of black voters will have had no representation in Congress for over nine months.
But all of that is just a sampler, and I am already tired of writing about the odoriferous crap. Perhaps it would be best to keep the release valves closed and let the sewer explode. Maybe blasting the lid off and letting the fresh air and sunshine rush in on all of that muck at once would be the quickest and most humane way to destroy it.
Some people dream of a day when the earth and its resources will be shared equitably for the benefit of all mankind, and others dream of a day when the rich and privileged will control everything. The interactions between those two groups are what we call "politics," and with each passing year as the greed of the rich and privileged grows, politics becomes uglier.
And smellier.
And more disgusting.
