Late yesterday evening in an attempt to stave off boredom and stir a little public adulation, Donald Trump, an in-patient at Walter Reed Medical Center, ordered his Secret Service detail to take him for a ride. Never mind that he'd was infected with a deadly disease and contagious, Trump wanted to go for a ride - so buckle up, Buttercup!
When Trump was suddenly transported to Walter Reed on Friday evening, the Republican Party of Maryland immediately went to work organizing "spontaneous" contingents of worried Americans to line the sidewalks around the hospital showing concern for his health. Sometime Sunday afternoon Trump saw these people on television and began planning a brief escape/publicity stunt, or as some termed it a "joyride."
At about 5:30 p.m. Trump and at least two Secret Servie agents climbed into a bullet-proof and hermetically sealed SUV and took a ride out onto the street where Trump waved and flashed a thumbs-up sign to his supporters who lined the local sidewalks. Trump wore a face mask during the ride.
Deputy White House Press Secretary Judd Deere said that the movement had been cleared by Trump's medical team as "safe to do," but other medical professionals were quick to disagreee with Trump's doctors. Dr. James P. Phillips of Walter Reed tweeted:
"The Risk of COVID 19 transmission inside (of the car) is as high as it gets outside of medical procedures. The irresponsibility is astounding. My thoughts are with the Secret Service forced to play."
Dr. Lena Wen, an ER physician who is a consultant for CNN, tweeted that if Trump were her patient in an unstable and contagious condition and suddenly wanted to go for a car ride that would endanger himself and others, she would have him restrained and forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
One Secret Service agent told CNN that the trip outside of the hospital "should never have happened," and another agent described it as "simply reckless."
But Trump, a man who requires constant attention, wanted to go for a ride. He disregarded the advice of doctors and the safety of his security detail in order to get his personal needs met. Donald John Trump knows what is best for himself - and for us - and facts to the contrary are nothing more than partisan lies or fake news.
When it was first announced that Trump and Melania had tested positive for the coronavirus, some openly hoped that Trump's new reality might force him to face up to the pandemic in a more realistic manner. That clearly has not happened.
