The dominoes are falling at a frenetic pace, and they are landing all over America's homophobes. A mere decade ago states were rushing to see how fast they could generate laws and constitutional amendments to limit or trample the rights of their gay citizens. Now those legal and societal barriers are coming down - and coming down fast!
This past Friday evening a judge in Arkansas held that the state's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. Some counties began issuing marriage licenses the following morning. That's Arkansas, old, Confederate Arkansas, land of the Walmart Waltons! Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said that he will appeal that decision on behalf of the state, although he has also previously announced his personal support for freedom to marry - another crack in the concrete mentality of Arkansas.
This weekend there was also a major gay rights story out of Arkansas's neighbor to the north, Missouri. University of Missouri defensive lineman, Michael Sam, who announced several weeks ago that he is gay, on Saturday became the first openly gay player ever drafted into the National Football League. And Sam's new team? The St. Louis Rams!
This is truly a "show me" state story from beginning to end. Rush Limbaugh should be so proud of his home state. Perhaps our state legislature will see fit to place a bronze cast of Mike Sam's head in the Capitol - right next to Limbag's!
Things are moving so fast, and in such a positive direction, that even the Supreme Court of Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas will not be able to stem the tide of progress! Like the citizens of Missouri routinely demand, the Justices will have been "shown" the way!
