My Congressman Ignores Labor Day

Today is Labor Day, the traditional day on which America honors its working men and women with parades, and picnics, and testimonials of support.  Labor Day also serves as a marker for the end of summer, and the students who aren't back in school yet will be shortly.

I was disappointed, though not surprised, to see that when my Republican congressman, Jason Smith, sent out his weekly email update this morning that he neglected to mention Labor Day or the fine people who the holiday honors.  Perhaps Smith thinks that any recognition of Labor Day could be misconstrued as support for unions - and Republicans are loathe to ever be associated with unions.

Smith titled this week's epistle "An Immoral Transfer of Wealth," and he used the communication to denounce just about any Biden program that benefits anybody - basically just a rehash of this week's GOP and Fox talking points.

But the congressman was particularly fired up about Biden's proposal to cancel up to twenty thousand dollars of student debt for some borrowers, a program which Smith falsely labeled a "giveaway to the wealthy."   (If it had been a giveaway to the wealthy, Smith and his GOP colleagues would have likely  had no problem with the program at all - just as they had no problem with Trump's massive tax cut for the wealthy -  a cut that Republican members of Congress gleefully supported and from which many personally benefitted.)

While this week's newsletter did not have any photos of Jason with livestock, it did feature one nice shot of him and a group of men standing in front of a very large piece of farm machinery.   The monster machine was apparently an "autonomous tractor" one of a class described by the congressman as being able to "run all on their own for hours on end."

Wow, driverless tractors - and the elimination of yet even more American jobs!

Happy Labor Day!
