The stabbing murders of a husband and wife who were hiking remote trails at the Devil's Den State Park in northwest Arkansas occurred this past Saturday afternoon, and by late Wednesday Arkansas State Police had arrested a suspect and charged him with two counts of capital murder.
State police arrested 28-year-old James Andrew McCann yesterday afternoon as he was having his hair cut at a hair salon in Springdale, Arkansas, roughly thirty miles from where the murders took place. (The suspect is referred to in some news sources as Andrew James McGann.). He is an elementary teacher who taught fifth grade in two Oklahoma school districts over the past two years, and has recently relocated to Arkansas where he had been hired to teach with the Springdale School District, but he had yet to have any contact with parents or students.
There has been no word released yet as to the suspect's motives for committing the murders, and authorities believe that the victims, Clinton and Amanda Brink of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, were unknown to their assailant. The couple's two daughters ages seven and nine, were with their parents at the time they were killed, but the murderer did not physically harm the children.
A spokesperson for the Arkansas State Police said their agency received an "overwhelming" number of tips from the public, some from as far away as Washington state, and that videos submitted by others who were at Devil's Den that day were instrumental in helping to identify the killer.
The fast resolution of this case is impressive and commendable. Good work, Arkansas State Police!
