Elderly convicted felon and current Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, had his racist flags flying high yesterday when he spoke at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago. Trump did not like the first question that was asked by Rachel Scott of ABC News, one of three black women moderators at the event. In a long and complex question that included several past racially disrespectful incidents such as when Trump insulted four black female members of Congress and when he had dinner with a white supremacist at Mar-a-Lago, Scott asked Trump:
"Why should black voters trust you when you have used language such as 'animal,' 'rabid,' and 'loser' when describing black political leaders?" Instead of answering the question, Trump chose to attack the questioner labeling her question as "rude" and "disrespectful," and saying that he regarded her employer, ABC News, as "fake news."
Trump quickly pivoted to a tangent where he questioned Vice President Harris's claims to be Black:
"She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn't know she was Black, until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black."
The truth is that Kamala Harris has always identified with her mother's Indian (South Asian) heritage and her father's Black (Jamaican) heritage. But Trump, who has an unhealthy interest in trying to categorize and define people by race and ethnicity - just ask Barack Obama or Nikki Haley - could not bring himself to talk about policies or his plans for America's future, when someone's race was readily available for discourse. That has always been one of his comfort zones.
Trump's rambling remarks were not well received by the 1,100 or so attendees at the event, most of whom were Black.
Later in the day Vice President Harris described Trump's remarks on her race as "the same old show of divisiveness and disrespect. The American people deserve better."
Yes, we do.
This time let's do it differently. Instead of being swept along in the sewer of politics that is animated by racism, hatred, and greed - let's focus on the future and work toward a tomorrow in which America is cleaner, greener, healthier, wealthier, better educated, more decent, and ultimately happier.
Donald Trump is running for President to stay out of jail and for the ultimate benefit of Donald Trump and his greedy friends. Kamala Harris is running to make life better for the rest of us.
It will be an easy choice this November.
