Echoes of the Terrorist Attack on Our Capitol

Yesterday marked the second anniversary of the savage attack on the United States Capitol building by anarchists and domestic terrorists, and while there was no large, official commemoration of that dastardly act of criminality and treason, there were some things happening that served as reminders of the awfulness of that day.

Most obviously, of course, was the battle going on inside of the Capitol this January 6th for control of the House of Representatives.  Late last night Speaker Designate Kevin McCarthy finally eked out a win to assume the position of Speaker of the House, although multiple news sources this morning indicate that to achieve that political goal McCarthy had to basically turn many of his powers and prerogatives as Speaker over to the lunatics in his caucus who had been standing in his path and blocking his reach for the gavel.  It took four long days of backroom dealing and fifteen votes before McCarthy could finally claim some semblance of party unity and the speakership, and now many are saying that it was a pyrrhic victory - and in the end his prize probably won't be worth having.

In another more formal observance of the terrorist attack on democracy, President Biden yesterday awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal to fourteen law enforcement personnel and election workers who stood strong in defense of American democracy and the rule of law.  The medal, which is one of the highest honors that a president can bestow, was given to people who had literally put their own lives on the line to preserve our freedom to vote.  Two of the election workers who were honored had been personally singled out by Trump and his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, who had accused the ladies of tampering with the votes in Georgia.  The allegations, like much of what comes from the mouths of Trump and Rudy, were totally false and resulted in credible threats to the women's safety, causing at least one of them to go into hiding.  Interestingly, Trump again this past week resumed making unfounded allegations against one of the women, a move that, some reasoned, was to take attention off of his own growing legal problems - some of which have roots in the January 6th riots at the Capitol.

And finally, in Missouri an electable Democrat announced his candidacy to unseat Josh Hawley in the 2024 race for US Senate.   Lucas Kunce, who had been an unsuccessful Senate candidate in 2022, but whose effort nevertheless proved his formidable campaign chops to Missouri voters, used the second anniversary of the January 6th attack to announce a run against Hawley.   In an epic campaign rollout video Kunce used scenes of Hawley on January 6th raising his fist in the air in support of the terrorists - and a clip of Hawley a couple of hours later running in panic from the terrorists to paint the senator as what Kunce called a "fraud" and a "coward."  He then poked fun at Hawley's new book about "Manhood," and showed photos of himself serving in uniform as an active duty marine in Afghanistan.

Lucas Kunce's campaign video is all over the internet - and well worth a watch.  Josh Hawley will not be getting a "free ride" back to the Senate in 2024.

The second anniversary of the terrorist attack on our nation's Capitol has now come and gone.  The House of Representatives has begun to organize (kinds, sorta), but is a much weaker institution than it recently has been, the presidency is flowering in a spirit of bipartisanship and growing noticeably stronger, and candidates are already stepping forward to carry the mantle of democracy into the 2024 elections.

Enjoy your honeymoon as Speaker of the House, Kevin.  It begins and ends today.
