January 6th Investigators Race the Clock

There are days when it feels as though absolutely nothing is moving forward in the pursuit of justice regarding the insurrection of January 6th, and there are other days in which progress is more apparent.

Last week the FBI revealed that 719 people have so far been charged with participating in the riots that brought our nation's government to a standstill last January, and information on others is still being sought.  The special congressional committee which is conducting an on-going investigation of what occurred that dreadful day is still meeting and apparently making quite a bit of progress.  They have referred some non-cooperative witnesses on to the full House where they have been cited for contempt of Congress, and last month former Trump adviser Steve Bannon was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of contempt of Congress.

But Bannon is low-hanging fruit on the tree of national villainy.

Yesterday the Republican vice-chair of the January 6th Committee, Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, grabbed a microphone and made national headlines when she read copies of text messages that several Fox News hosts and Donald Trump, Jr. had sent to Trump advisor Mark Meadows which literally begged Meadows to intercede with Trump and get him to ask the rioters to stand down and leave the Capitol.

There have also been stories in the press about a retired Army officer who was circulating among Trump officials and members of Congress showing a Power Point demonstration of how Congress could nullify or at least not certify the election results.  Today there are stories in the press which indicate that the committee is ready to begin identifying the members of Congress who may have been acting in support of the rioters.

So there is movement, but there is also a big clock ticking in the background.  If Republicans win control of the House of Representatives next November, even if it is just by a couple of seats, no one doubts that they will dispose of the select committee on the day that they are sworn in next January.  And as of yet, none of the really big names have been made to testify, much less been held to account.

The little fish, 719 and counting, are being hauled in, but the big fish, those who plotted and abetted the biggest political crime of my lifetime, are still swimming free.  Godspeed to Liz Cheney and all of the other members of the House of Representatives, who are working resolutely to bring all of this treachery to light.  May they be wildly successfully in finding out what actually happened on January 6th, and then may our Justice Department be just as diligent in holding the enemies of democracy accountable before the law.

Tick, tock!

The wheels of Justice grind slowly but grind exceedingly fine.
The public is just beginning to get a peek into the evidence of the seditious conspiracy which ended in a violent insurrection.

The January 6th Committee said they want to make the evidence public when they have a more complete picture of the events within their mandate.

Today the Attorney General, using the Ku Klux Klan Act, sued a number of radicalized right wing hate groups that participated in the insurrection.

The pieces of the puzzle are coming together. That's important because no prosecuting attorney brings criminal charges on a hunch. Charges are filed when the prosecuting attorney reasonably believes that each element of each charge can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

Stay tuned, this is just getting started.
