One of the races that I have truly enjoyed following this election is the exciting Senate race out of Texas. By rights, there should be no excitement in that race because the incumbent is a nationally known Republican running for re-election in a predominantly red state. But Ted Cruz, the Republican, is not your average GOP candidate, and his Democratic challenger, Congressman Beto O'Rourke, has proven himself to be a hard-hitting, persistent, and relentless opponent.
Cruz ought to be leading by twenty points, but instead most reliable polls give him a very minor lead of just a few points. And Beto is not slacking off!
Ted Cruz has one primary obstacle that is proving difficult to overcome: he is Ted Cruz, and many people, including some of his GOP colleagues in the Senate, do not like him. He is loud and brash and obviously more focused on another run for the White House than he is in addressing the needs and concerns of ordinary Texans.
Beto O'Rourke, on the other hand, is a dynamo in rolled-up shirt sleeves who draws huge, boisterous crowds and is not afraid to speak on the issues, even with views that are not generally seen as conservative enough for Texas. O'Rourke, who has visited all 254 counties in Texas, often driving himself in his own car, is comfortable rubbing shoulders with real people - real Texans, while his opponent, Cruz, comes across as more of an imperious creature of Washington, DC.
Beto O'Rourke should lose tonight, but he has run such a great race that an upset is definitely within reach - and if that happens my prediction is that it will signal that tomorrow morning will look very blue indeed!
Beto's positive and energetic campaign has added Democratic strength to every other race in Texas, and it has inspired Democratic candidates - and voters - from coast to coast. He is everything that Ted Cruz isn't - and that's a huge plus for Texas.
Give 'em hell, Beto!
