One of the goals that I mentioned in yesterday's posting was to get out and see more of the world. I have one trip confirmed for this new year, and a couple of others are in the "being-kicked-around" stage of development. Patti and I will fly out of Kansas City on January 17th enroute to San Diego for a two-day stay and then on to Honolulu. We will be in Hawaii seven days, and our return flight to the mainland will take us to Portland, Oregon, where we will deplane for four additional days before return to Kansas City and ultimately home.
We will be seeing Aunt Mary and my cousins, Linda and Janet, in San Diego. I used to drop in on them regularly while I was living in Arizona (San Diego is a nice five-hour drive from Phoenix), but I haven't been out that way now in over four years. Patti has never been to California, so she might as well start with one of the most beautiful parts of the state. (This will also be her first trip to Hawaii and Oregon.)
We will be staying at a hotel in Honolulu that is a block from the famous Waikiki beach. I stayed at the Army's old Ft. DeRussy Hotel on Waikiki Beach for two nights back in 1973, but have not been back to Hawaii since. My friend Valerie, from Arizona and Okinawa, lives and works in Honolulu and plans to show us around while we are there.
The stopover in Oregon will allow Patti to meet my Oregon grandchildren.
The next outing is likely to be a road trip through the American northwest sometime this summer, a beautiful drive that I have made twice before and will culminate in another visit with the Oregon grandchildren.
Other places we have talked about going include Italy, which is high on Patti's list, and Nantucket which houses a lot of my family history. I also have a desire to delve into the southern hemisphere at least once while I am still standing upright on this speeding mud ball.
Not too long ago I received a Polish quarter in change and my favorite quick stop and felt that might be an omen for a place that I should visit. I mean, what do I really know about Poland, anyway? Then, just this past week, I received a Bermuda dime in change at the same quick stop. The travel gods, it would seem, are preparing an itinerary!
Late this afternoon I will be traveling to Mountain Home, Arkansas, to meet a new doctor - a sure sign that the time one has in life to travel and explore the world is limited.
I plan to keep a suitcase packed during my golden years. The Reaper who comes after me will have to earn his bounty!

Wow! You two are going to have such fun. As your headed south on Highway 5, en route to Mountain Home, you'll pass a couple of businesses just north of the state line. Once in Arkansas, but before you can make a right turn, you'll notice the Oakland Cemetery off to your left. That's where my great grandparents rest. Other relatives, good friends of the family, and the bodies of our slaves are buried there as well. I still can't believe anyone in my gene pool was wealthy enough to own a person. I hope they treated them with respect and dignity. However, given my mother's deep fears on the subject, I doubt it.
I drove back that way and saw the Oakland Cemetery. What a beautiful hilltop location. Your relatives are resting in a very peaceful setting - with an epic view of the Ozarks!
...truck on Rock; truck on. Dug your writing on the flu; needless to say, i always enjoy your Trump jabs.
