I have spent a considerable amount of time criticizing
Arizona’s mean-spirited governor, Jan Brewer, over the past few years, so I
think it only fair when the governor finally does something positive that I
should note that as well. Recently
Brewer announced, to almost everyone’s surprise in the Scorpion State, that she
has reconsidered her opposition to Medicaid expansion and now supports the
program which will bring a gusher of new money to Arizona and would offer free
medical care to individuals making below 138% of the federal poverty level.
Initially that will increase the federal contribution to
Arizona’s Medicaid program to $1.6 billion while maintaining a state match of
only $250 million a year. The Arizona
portion is funded by a levy on hospitals.
Better health care for Arizona’s neediest citizens – funded
by the federal government. What’s not to
like?
The Democrats in the state legislature appear to be with the
governor in supporting this facet of the Obamacare program, but Republicans are
having a tough time agreeing with anything that smacks of cooperating with the
federal government or aiding the poor.
Some are worried that the state won’t be able to make up the difference
when the federal portion declines in a couple of years, but the governor has
promised to add a “circuit-breaker”to the legislation that will opt Arizona out of the program if
the federal share drops below a certain level.
Others are expressing concerns about the negative impact that they feel
this new federal expenditure will have on the national budget - although that is by no means certain, and
the Obama administration argues that better national health care will have a
positive result with regard to the federal budget.
Yesterday Governor Brewer held a rally of physicians and
nurses at the state capitol in support of the Medicaid expansion. Notable bystanders to the event included a
contingent of Arizona teabaggers who were adamant and vocal in their opposition
to Obamacare and Medicaid expansion.
The baggers aren’t happy with anything that comes from the Obama
administration or benefits the poor – and keep your dirty hands off of their
Medicare!
So what’s the difference between an Arizona scorpion and an
Arizona teabagger? The scorpion is
smarter and much more pleasant.
Governor Brewer, thank you for showing a bit of
humanity. Here’s hoping it becomes a
habit.

The formula is mean ≠ stupid.
