Today, on a whim, I made a rash decision to head out for Los Angeles after work. I made it as far as Indio, California, where I am hunkered down in a Motel 6 for the night. In the morning I will drive a couple of more hours and then be with Tim, Erin, and Baby Olive.
I will be flying to Oregon in three weeks to see Molly and her family, including Baby Willow whom I have yet to meet. Labor Day weekend will find me in Missouri with Nick and Boone - they don't know that yet - unless they happen to read this blog entry. Later that week I will hook up with Tim and his family again as we head to the Toronto Film Festival. Then, sadly, it will be back to work.
I stopped for gas tonight at a decrepit truck stop just outside of Blythe, California. It looked and felt like something out of a Hitchcock movie. As I weaved my way through the old and dark structure looking for the restroom, I came across a closed door with a sign that said "Tokyo Massage." I tried not to touch anything until I was safely back outside!
I remember coming through Indio with my parents when I was little. It was a small, quaint community with lots of palm trees. Now it is a sprawling metropolis that sports a couple of large casinos out by the interstate. Times change, unfortunately.
The Saturn Vue is driving wonderfully - and the gas mileage appears to be better than what I expected.
Just heard that a couple of my buddies on Okinawa are spending the weekend at the Okuma military resort. Wish I was with them!
