The Recorder of Deeds for Jefferson County, Missouri, is not
a position that should generate much national news, but for the past several
days it has done just that.
The current Recorder of Deeds for Jefferson County, Debbie
Dunnegan Waters, has drawn a fair bit of national notoriety and scrutiny for a
posting that she put on her Facebook page.
Ms. Dunnegan Waters, a Republican – of course, wondered in cyberspace why the
military could not take some action against “our domestic enemy,” the person
who is “supposedly the commander in chief.”
Seriously. One more
embarrassment for the state that can’t seem to get over Ferguson.
According to the St.
Louis Post Dispatch and several national news outlets, Ms. Dunnegan Waters
stated:
“I have a question for all my friends who have served or are serving in the military . . . having not put on a uniform nor taken any type of military oath, there has to be something that I am just not aware of. But I cannot and do not understand why no action is being taken against our domestic enemy. I know he is supposedly the commander in chief, but the constitution gives you the authority. What am I missing? Thank you for your bravery and may God keep you safe.”
Really Deb? It sounds
like you are pining for a coup d’ etat against your “domestic enemy.” I’m fairly certain there is no provision in
the Constitution for the military to forcefully remove a popularly elected
President from office. (Perhaps you
are thinking of some other American constitution – say like the ones of
Nicaragua or Bolivia.) The Constitution
of the United States of America was written to insure that democracy could work
without military takeovers. It’s a great
document – well worth a read. (And it is
undoubtedly available on tape, as well.)
Ms. Dunnegan Waters did take posting down after it started
generating controversy. The
Recorder of Deeds, who is running for re-election in a few weeks, told the St. Louis Post Dispatch “Something
innocent and simple got twisted into a disaster because it’s an election.”
Innocent and simple?
Or some red meat flung to voters in a very white county not too far from
scary, inner-city St. Louis?
Our Constitution works – and it allows people who are
elected to serve their terms without fear of being removed by the
military. Anyone who can’t abide such a
lenient structure of government should perhaps be seeking employment outside of
government – or maybe even in a country run by the military. There are plenty of those around - but thankfully ours is not one of them.

Wow, Adams and Jefferson were correct. There are some citizens that should never be allowed to vote!
Article II of the Constitution is devoid of granting the military the power of coup d'état. In fact it is treason for the Pentagon, or a small cadre of the military, to use military force to remove the President. See, 18 U.S. Code § 2381 - Treason.
My fear isn't that Debbie Dunnegan Waters is an ill educated person. Rather I fear for the future of our children who apparently are being subjected to a curricula which ignores science, is stuffed with revisionist history, and confuses the content of the Constitution with episodes from movies starring Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal ,or Chuck Norris.
