Curtains Up: "High School Musical" Opens Tonight!

Proud Grandpa

This morning finds me at the home of my son, Tim, and his family in Roeland Park, Kansas - a suburb of Kansas City.  The kids are at school, the parents are at work, and it is just myself, Jack the dog, and Rerun the cat at home by ourselves enjoying the morning calm.  Jack and Rerun are both asleep in their respective hideouts, preferring to leave the guest alone to entertain himself.

This trip to Kansas City has an important purpose.  Granddaughter Olive, age ten, will be appearing tonight in the play "High School Musical" at the Culture House in Olathe, Kansas.  This is opening night for the Disney musical, and it will run for a total of four performances over the weekend - and all have sold out!  Pa Rock was lucky to get a ticket!

The Culture House was organized to teach acting and stagecraft to young people.  They work with kids from around the area from ages seven to eighteen.  Olive will be one of the younger performers in this production.   She got the part through an audition process, and has been going to rehearsals for the past several months.  Tim, who has a lot of experience with acting and actors, told me that the production is very demanding.  Rehearsals this week have lasted five hours each evening.

But my granddaughter had held up through the rigorous process and seems anxious to get out there and "tread the boards" tonight!

And I am anxious - and excited - for her!

Break a leg, Olive!  (And don't be distracted by all of the whooping and yelling coming from the audience - that will just be your grandfather cheering you on!)
