Traveling Fool
Rosie and I are on the road today driving almost five hours to reach our little home near West Plains, Missouri. Last night Tim's family and I saw "Spamalot" at Kansas City's beautiful and massive outdoor venue, the Starlight Theatre. The weather was perfect with many of the patrons wearing shorts and tees and other summer garb.
The Starlight is a place everyone should experience at least once in their lives.
Although the Macys are lifelong fans of live theatre and all have been to performances on Broadway (and the old geezer has even seen a could of shows on London's famed "West. End"), none of us had previously seen Monty Python's "Spamalot," and what a show it is - absolutely pitcch-perfect musical theatre! I was especially impressed that the traveling national cast knew where they were performing and showed their respect to the audience and the venue by peppering the stage dialogue with references to Kansas City landmarks and notable residents. (I've been to events in Kansas City where the visiting performers reference how happy they are to be in Kansas!)
"Spamalot" had one notable tie-in to the film version of "The Odyssey" which we had seen the night before. "The Odyssey," a story focused on the involvement of Odyessus in the Trojan Wars, featured the large, wooden "Trojan Horse," the device that the Greeks used to sneak into Troy and open the gates for the Greek invaders. "Spamalot" has a large wooden rabbit designed for the same purpose, but the hapless gang from King Arthur's court forgot to climb into it before the French took it into their city!
Great night, great fun, wonderful getting to see the grandkids - and a long, damned drive home!
But, it's a beautiful day today - make it count! As the gang on stage last night sang, "Always look on the bright side of life!"
