With the corrosive Supreme Court decision in Citizens United now safely on the books, corporate money is going to be more plentiful in the 2012 election cycle than hookers at an NRA convention. At least a dozen Republicans are in the money chase, a situation that almost guarantees that some will step over the line (loose though it already is) in the rush to get more and more of this corporate "speech."
One of the first significant scandals in the current race to the White House may already be coming to light. Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts who has exceedingly large amounts of family wealth and political connections, is being subjected to polite (so far) inquiries about a million-dollar donation that was made to his PAC, Restore Our Future, under less-than-transparent conditions.
The money was donated (or washed) through a mysterious group called W Spann, LLC. It was created in March of this year, listed an official address that it never occupied in Manhattan, and was mysteriously dissolved in July of this year shortly before its sole donation (the one million to the Mittster) was made public. Reporters trying to follow the money are, of course, running up against a big stone wall.
This election is going to be so much fun, because when it comes to sleazy campaign practices (especially regarding money) nobody does it better than the GOP!

Dear Ms. Kilby,
Thank you for contacting me with your views concerning the vote on the debt ceiling increase. This is an issue I am watching very closely because I intend to fight and make sure that we continue to work to achieve real, lasting reform that restores America's solvency. Now is the time to act with a sense of urgency to bring America's budget back to a sustainable path.
In order to accomplish this task Congress must make tough decisions, and I know those decisions will not be made quickly or easily. That is why I am a cosponsor of H.R. 2402, the Prioritize Spending Act of 2011, a measure which directs the Treasury to prioritize payments to service the debt, pay salaries to our soldiers and benefits to senior citizens like Social Security and Medicare. I believe we should be able to have an honest discussion about our nation's fiscal policy without politicians cynically using seniors and veterans to smear their opponents.
On August 1, 2011, the House passed the Budget Control Act with a wide, bipartisan majority. I supported the Budget Control Act because it cut spending and did not increase the tax burden on Americans struggling to make ends meet. The Budget Control Act also directs Congress to vote on a Balanced Budget Amendment, which if passed would bring serious spending controls to our government. A Balanced Budget Amendment would provide the American people with the peace of mind that government spending is under control. The Budget Control Act also passed the Senate by a wide, bipartisan majority and was signed into law on August 2, 2011.
The Budget Control Act also provides controls so that spending will be reduced automatically if Congress fails to meet its budget targets. The Budget Control Act will create a special joint select committee to propose additional cuts before the debt ceiling can be increased again. This committee would be composed of six members of the House of Representatives and six Senators. Once this committee agrees on a package of spending reductions, the House and the Senate will have an up or down vote of approval. If the committee is successful then the President will be able to request an additional increase in the debt ceiling equal to the amount of money saved by the joint select committee, but not more than $1.5 trillion. However, if the committee fails to make sufficient cuts, the budget trigger will make automatic reductions in spending and the President will be able to increase in the debt ceiling by $1.2 trillion.
Repeated stonewalling efforts by the Administration and the Senate have demonstrated that getting real solutions to our deficit problem will not be quick. It will require the commitment of the American people to demand that their Representatives behave in fiscally responsible ways. I sincerely appreciate your interest in this issue and I hope that you will continue to be engaged in the process of crafting a solution which will preserve our great nation for the next generation.
