Proud Grandpa
My oldest grandchild, Boone Macy, who hasn't been a "child" since Hector was a pup, turns twenty-six today. Boone is actually the one who, when he was just a wee sprout, gave me the name "Pa Rock," because he was already calling his other grandfather "Pa."
Boone and I were close when he was younger and took some nice trips together, once to San Diego where he saw an ocean for the first time and got to play in the surf, another to the Grand Canyon and Sedona, and one big excursion to Disney World at Orlando followed by a Disney cruise on the Caribbean. We also were on a train trip together from Topeka, Kansas, to Flagstaff, Arizona. But now he's older and can take trips on his own.
Boone, like many of us, went to school to learn one profession and wound up doing something quite different. He has a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, but earns his living as a tour guide in one of southwest Missouri's nicer caves. So he talks smack to tourists during his workdays while explaining rock formations and the ecosystem of caves - and probably dodging the occasional bat. During his free time, I understand that Boone likes to spelunk in many of the other caves in the area that have yet to be opened to tourists. It sounds like my grandson has found his passion, and Pa Rock is very happy about that.
Do what you love and the money will follow - or not - but do not go through life working at a job you hate.
Boone, I hear great things about you. Keep making us all proud - and stay in touch.
